The Dutch South African Village ( here and here).Through my blog I have shared home tours from almost every remaining historic Village in The Gables, including: Only 80 of the 1,000 planned residences were built, as Merrick’s vision was crushed by the Hurricane of 1926 and the Great Depression, yet today those that remain are highly coveted, carefully guarded jewels within our community. The Villages were designed to add diversity to the predominantly Mediterranean character of Coral Gables by showcasing architectural styles from around the world. Today I will show you the idyllic Villages which were conceived in the 1920s as “The Village Project” by George Merrick. After moving here six years ago from Dallas, this seventh generation Texan is still desperately homesick, but I do have a keen appreciation for the magnificent historic homes here in The City Beautiful. I have been reading Southern Living since I was 12 years old, so I was thrilled when the publication contacted me about doing an Instagram takeover!
